Anastasia State Park Photography Contest
August 15, 2012-November 15, 2012
Anastasia State Park welcomes all of our visitors to enjoy over 1600 acres of barrier island enchantment. Relax in our shady hammock, fish in the colorful salt marsh, or swim in the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
Anastasia was acquired in 1949. We have 6 distinct natural communities within our park including the beach dunes and shorelines, maritime hammock, and tidal marsh. Great numbers of diverse plants and animals call our park home! While visiting with us you may see various shore and marsh birds including the Roseate Spoonbill, Great Blue Heron, and Royal Terns. Songbirds such as the Painted Bunting, Cardinal, and our Florida state bird, the Mockingbird. Great Horned and Screech Owls, various snakes, dolphins, lizards, numerous butterflies, gopher tortoise, and raccoons. Some of our more elusive animals may include the Anastasia Island Beach Mouse and nesting Sea Turtles!
Island Beach Shop and Grill located at the end of the main park road offers a large variety of items for our park visitors, beachgoers, and campers.
Bicycles and beach equipment rentals are also available. The grill offers cook to order breakfast and lunch items. Beach wheel chairs are accessible at the Island Beach Shop and Grill at no charge and are available on a first come, first served basis.
Anastasia Watersports is located at the Salt Run tidal lagoon. Canoes, kayaks, catamarans, paddle boats, and windsurfing equipment are available for rent. They also offer windsurfing lessons, fishing tours, and eco kayak tours.
We encourage you to take advantage of assorted events and programs offered at the park. Some examples include a ranger led walk on the wild side which occurs the last Saturday of every month at 9:00 a.m., to an exciting bird walk viewing shorebirds on the beach and songbirds in the hammock. We also invite you to join us for our month evening programs. The first Saturday of each month we will provide an outdoor program led by one of our park rangers. We also have yearly events such as our Annual Beach Bash in June, and our Annual Endless Summer Run in September. For more information on programs and events, go to our website www.flroidastatparks.org.
Anastasia’s goal is to provide resource based recreation while preserving, interpreting, and restoring our natural and cultural resources. We have 11 recorded archaeological sites within our park. Don’t leave without visiting one of our fascinating cultural resources within the park “The Old Spanish Quarry” located at the entrance to the park. In 1970 this site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in contribution to the settlement of St.Augustine, including the Coquina stone needed to build the Castillio de San Marcos.
If you enjoy visiting Anastasia or any other of our Florida State Parks throughout the year, consider purchasing an annual park pass at our ranger station. You may also be interested in joining our community service organization Friends of Anastasia. The Friends of Anastasia is our citizen support organization. They are a great group of unique citizens who help support Anastasia State Park with services that enhance the experience of all who visit this special place. Join now and receive a pass for 12 free admissions into the park, a $96.00 value for $25.00, and you are joining an organization with a worthy cause. Please visit their website at www.friendsofanastasia.org. for more information.
Located within the Spanish Coquina Quarry is a leisurely stroll though the hammock, while walking on our Dunes Trail is sure to be exciting for all. The Dunes trail is a full circle, and takes you through ancient sand dunes and provides you the opportunity to see various plants and animals with interpretive signs throughout. The Ancient Dune Trail Parking area is located just past the entrance to the Coquina loop campground on your right.
Thank you for visiting our park. We hope you will enjoy your visit to Anastasia State Park and cherish it as much as we do!
